Water pollution happens when substances or energy enter a water body.

This changes the nature of the water in bad ways. It makes it hard for people to use the water for drinking. It also harms the living things that call the water home. This can happen in oceans, rivers, and lakes. It can even affect groundwater deep beneath the earth.

Pollution can change how many fish can live in a river. It can also spread diseases to humans and animals.

There are different ways that pollution enters the water. Some pollution comes from a single, clear spot. Scientists call these point sources. An example is a pipe from a wastewater treatment plant. Other pollution comes from many places at once. These are called non-point sources. For example, rain can wash dirt and oil from many roads into drains.

This runoff can carry many different things into the water. It can also carry nutrients from big farms. These nutrients can cause too much algae to grow in a lake.

Many different kinds of things can pollute the water. Some are solid, like trash or plastic.

Some plastics are so tiny they are called microplastics. These often come from synthetic clothes or car tires. Other pollutants are chemicals like pesticides or heavy metals. Even heat can be a type of pollution.

Power plants sometimes use water to cool their machines. This makes the water too warm for many fish. Warm water holds less oxygen, which can make fish die.

Scientists study these problems to find ways to help. They use special tools to take water samples.

They look for things like bacteria or harmful chemicals. For example, they look for E. coli to see if water is dirty. They also check for things like nitrogen or phosphorus. In 2017, it was estimated that 4.5 billion people lacked safe sanitation.

This lack of clean systems can lead to more pollution. Protecting our water requires good management and new technology.

Understanding water pollution helps us see how our world is connected. When we wash clothes, tiny fibers can travel to the sea.

When it rains on a city, the water carries street dust into rivers. This shows that what we do on land affects the water. We can use technology to fix these problems. We can build better ways to treat sewage and manage runoff.
