Most mineral water is still and does not have bubbles. Some mineral water is sparkling or carbonated. This means it has bubbles inside it. People use this water for many different reasons. It is a very common drink all over the world.

There is a specific way this water is made. It must come from a protected underground source. In the United States, the FDA has strict rules. The water must have at least 250 parts per million of dissolved solids. This is a way to measure the minerals. No one is allowed to add minerals to this water.

In the European Union, the rules are also very specific. The water must be bottled right at its source. It can only have very small amounts of treatment. This treatment can remove things like iron or arsenic.

People have a long history with these springs. In the past, people would travel to the water. They would visit places like spas, baths, or wells. This was often called "taking the waters" or "taking the cure."

Today, things are very different for most people. It is much more common to buy bottled water. You do not have to travel to the spring anymore. Many mineral waters are now bottled at the source. This makes them easy to find in stores.

Some people might think it is different from tap water. In some places, people use the term for any soda water. But tap water can also have many minerals in it. One study found North American mineral water had lower mineral levels than tap water. You can also get minerals from other foods you eat. Eating food can be cheaper than buying bottled water.
