Groundwater

earth science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Groundwater is a hidden treasure found beneath the Earth's surface. It fills the tiny spaces in soil and the cracks in rocks. This water is vital because it makes up about 30 percent of the world's ready fresh water.

In fact, about 99 percent of the world's liquid fresh water is actually groundwater. It acts as a natural storage system for the planet. This storage helps protect us during dry times when rivers might run low.

The way groundwater works follows a natural cycle of movement. First, water from rain, streams, or rivers soaks into the ground. This process is called infiltration. The water then moves downward through the soil and rock. It eventually reaches the water table, which is the level where the ground becomes completely soaked.

Once it reaches this level, the water stays in layers called aquifers. An aquifer is a unit of rock or soil that can hold and give up usable water. Some water may stay underground for a very long time.

Scientists who study this hidden water are called hydrogeologists. They study how groundwater moves and where it is located. They have found amazing things by looking at the water's age. For example, in the Great Artesian Basin in Australia, some water is over 1 million years old!

This water moves very slowly through the earth. In that basin, it travels at an average rate of only 1 metre per year. This means it takes a huge amount of time to travel across the continent.

Humans use groundwater in many different ways every single day. It provides at least half of the drinking water for people worldwide. More than 2 billion people rely on it as their main water source.

We also use it for farming and for making things in factories. In the United States, groundwater is the largest source of usable water storage. California is the state that takes out the most groundwater every year.

We must be careful with how we use this resource. If we pump too much water out, the land can actually sink. This is called land subsidence, and it has caused cities like Bangkok to sink.

Pollution is another big problem for groundwater. Chemicals from farms or factories can soak into the ground and hide there. Because this water is underground, it is much harder to clean than a river or a lake.
