Aquifer

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An aquifer is a special layer of material deep underground. It is made of things like sand, gravel, or even rock with cracks in it. Many people think an aquifer is like an underground lake or river.

However, it is actually just material that is full of water. The word comes from Latin words meaning "water-bearing." These layers are very important because they hold much of our fresh water.

To understand how it works, think about a wet sponge. A sponge has tiny holes that hold water. In an aquifer, the tiny holes are in the rocks or sand. This is called being porous. Water moves through these holes very slowly.

There is a line called the water table. Above this line, the ground is unsaturated, meaning there are pockets of air. Below the line, the ground is saturated, so all the spaces are full of water.

Scientists who study how water moves in these layers are called hydrogeologists. They look at different kinds of aquifers to see how they behave. Some aquifers are unconfined, which means they have no lid on top. Rain can soak straight down to fill them.

Other aquifers are confined. These have a layer called an aquitard sitting above them. An aquitard is a tight layer of clay or rock that stops water from moving easily.

Aquifers can be found at many depths. Some are near the surface, while others are deeper than 9,000 metres.

In 2013, scientists found huge new aquifers under the ocean near Australia and China. These hold a massive amount of water. This water was trapped there when ocean levels were lower during the ice age. It was formed about 20,000 years ago. This discovery showed that there is much more water underground than we once thought.

Humans use wells to reach this water for many things. We use it to grow food on farms and to provide water for our homes. It can even be used for industrial work or energy.

We must be careful to use it wisely. If we take too much water, it is called overdrafting. This can cause the land to sink or let saltwater leak in. Keeping our aquifers healthy is a big job for everyone.
