Artesian well

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An artesian well is a special kind of well. It brings water to the surface without using a pump. This happens because water is trapped deep underground. The water sits inside a layer of rock or sand called an aquifer.

In some places, this water is under a lot of pressure. This pressure helps push the water up toward us. It is a very useful way to find fresh water.

To understand how it works, think about layers of earth. Some layers are made of clay or rock. These layers are impermeable, which means water cannot pass through them. These layers surround the water in the aquifer. This creates what is called positive pressure.

When a well pipe is drilled into the aquifer, the water rises. It goes up until it reaches a point called hydrostatic equilibrium. If the pressure is strong enough, the water flows onto the ground. This is called a flowing artesian well.

People have studied these wells for a very long time. A man named Al-Biruni gave the first accurate explanation of them. The name comes from a place called Artois in France. In the year 1126, monks known as Carthusians drilled many wells there.

They were some of the first to use this method. This history shows how important water has always been to people.

There are many different facts about these water sources. Some aquifers contain what is called fossil water. This is very old water stored deep in the ground. Even fossil water can be artesian if the rocks press on it. This works much like how new oil wells are pressurized.

Not all aquifers work this way, though. Some water tables are at equilibrium with the air around us. These are called water table aquifers instead.

Aquifers need to recharge to keep working. This happens at a place called a recharge zone. The water table at this zone must be higher than the well. This allows new water to flow into the system. It is like a tank that slowly refills itself. Knowing how this works helps us use water wisely. We can see these patterns in nature every day.
