Guarani Aquifer

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Guarani Aquifer is a huge underground store of fresh water. It is the second largest known aquifer system in the world. This massive reservoir sits beneath the soil of four different countries. These lands are Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is named after the Guarani people. This water is very important for people to drink.

An aquifer is a way that water stays in the ground. This one is made mostly of sand and rock. Much of the area is covered by a rock called basalt. This basalt acts like an aquitard, which is a layer that holds water in. It has low permeability, meaning it is hard for water to pass through it. This layer helps keep the water safe from the surface. It also stops the water from drying up through evaporation.

Scientists have studied how this water gets into the ground. This process is called recharge. Rain falls and soaks into the soil to fill the reservoir. The amount of water that stays depends on many things. Plants and the air also play a part in this system. For example, leaves can catch some rain before it hits the ground. This is called vegetal interception.

This aquifer has many impressive numbers. It covers a huge area with a volume of about 43,000 cubic kilometers. The thickness of the water layer is between 150 and 300 meters. It can reach a maximum depth of about 500 meters. The total recharge rate is about 166 cubic kilometers every year. If the world population stayed at 6.96 billion people, this water could last 1600 years. Each person could have about 9 liters of water every day.

We must be careful to keep this water clean. Many people live in this area and use the water. This means there is a higher risk of pollution. A study by Embrapa in Brazil found that farm chemicals can risk contaminating the water. Some parts of the sand and rock are exposed at the surface. These are called outcrops, and they are where rain enters. We must study the aquifer to manage it well for the future.
