Groundwater is the water found beneath the Earth's surface. It fills the tiny spaces in soil and rocks. This water is very important for our world. Between 25 percent and 40 percent of the world's drinking water comes from wells. Farmers also use it to grow crops. Industries use it to make many everyday goods. Most groundwater is clean and safe. However, it can become polluted by human activities or natural conditions.

When groundwater is polluted, it can cause health problems like poisoning or disease. Groundwater remediation is the way we fix this. Remediation means treating the water to remove pollutants. This can turn bad things into harmless products. People use many different ways to clean the water. Some ways use biological methods, which use living things. Others use chemical methods or physical methods. Scientists often use a mix of these techniques to get the best results.

Biological treatment uses tiny living things called microorganisms. These microbes can eat and break down organic parts of the pollution. One way is called bioventing. This involves blowing air or oxygen into the soil to help the microbes work. Another way is called biosparging. This injects air directly into the water zone to help microbes clean up oil. People even use plants for this called phytoremediation. For example, the Chinese Ladder fern can soak up arsenic.

Chemical treatment uses different substances to clean the water. One method is called chemical oxidation. This uses things like ozone or hydrogen peroxide to destroy pollutants. Another method is called ion exchange. This uses special beads to pull certain parts out of the water. There is also carbon adsorption. This uses activated carbon, often made from coal, to catch organic compounds. Some people even use surfactants. These are ingredients like those in soap that help move the pollution so it can be removed.

Physical treatment methods move the water or the pollution itself. The most common way is called pump and treat. This involves pumping the dirty water to the surface to clean it. Another way is air sparging. This blows air into the water to strip away the pollutants. Some systems use a high vacuum to pull out both water and vapors. This is called dual-phase vacuum extraction. It is very helpful because it cleans the area just above the water table. This area often holds a lot of the pollution.
