Environmental remediation is the important work of cleaning up pollution. Sometimes, harmful substances get into the soil, groundwater, or the mud at the bottom of a river. This is called contamination. Scientists and workers must find ways to remove or treat these materials to keep the Earth safe.

This work is often required by laws before new buildings can be made on a piece of land. In some places, like New York, people who clean up land can receive special help through programs.

There are two main ways to do this job. The first way is called ex-situ, which means the dirty material is moved. Workers might dig up the soil or pump out the water to treat it at the surface.

Another way is called in-situ, which means treating the mess without moving it. For example, workers can use bioremediation, which uses tiny living things to help clean an area. They might also use chemical oxidation to treat soil in large, special areas.

Before any cleaning starts, experts must perform a site assessment. They often begin with a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment to learn about the land. They look at how the land was used in the past to see what might be hidden.

They might test the topsoil, the air, or even the dust on ceilings. This is a hard job because testing can be expensive. It can also be a difficult topic if nearby properties are found to be dirty.

Different countries use different rules to decide when a site is clean. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides many standards. They use things called Regional Screening Levels to guide their work.

In Europe, people often use the Dutch standards. Canada has its own rules that are set by each province. These rules help make sure the cleaning is done correctly and safely.

Sometimes, people use barriers to stop pollution from spreading. A barrier wall is a strong wall made of materials that liquids cannot pass through.

Workers can build these using slurry walls or even by freezing the ground. In the 1950s and 1960s, new chemical grouts were used to make these walls better. Now, some barriers are designed to last for at least 50 years. This helps keep the pollution trapped in one place so it cannot reach people or animals.
