There are two main ways to clean a site. One way is called ex-situ. This means moving the dirty material to the surface. Workers dig up the soil or pump out the water. Then, they treat it in a different place.

The other way is called in-situ. This means cleaning the mess without moving it. For example, workers can use bioremediation. This uses tiny living things to help clean the area. They can also use barriers. A barrier is like a strong wall. These walls can be made of cement or special chemicals. They stop the pollution from spreading to new places.
