Environmental biotechnology

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Scientists use living things to help the Earth. This field is called environmental biotechnology. It uses plants, animals, and tiny microbes. We also use fungi and algae. These living things can clean up land, air, and water.

Some microbes can eat oil. This helps clean up oil spills in the sea. They use the oil as power. Other microbes can eat farm sprays. This helps keep soil safe for crops. Scientists can even find genes in these microbes. They can move these genes to other tiny cells. This helps make things like medicine.

We can also use these systems to make food. They can make renewable energy, too. In these systems, one process helps another. The leftovers from one step become food for the next. This helps us make less waste.

We must be careful, though. Adding new microbes can change nature. It might break the balance of a place. We must study the risks. This helps us keep the world safe while we use new tools.
