Environmental biotechnology

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Environmental biotechnology is a way to use life to help our planet. It studies how biological systems can fix parts of nature that are dirty. This includes cleaning up the land, the air, and the water. Scientists use living things like plants, animals, and fungi. They also use tiny bacteria and algae to do this work. These tools help us create green manufacturing and sustainable development.

This science works by using the natural habits of living things. One way is to use an integrated system for energy and food. In these systems, the leftovers from one process become inputs for another. This helps us create renewable energy and nutrients with very little waste. For example, farmers can use anaerobic digestion to make biogas. This is a way to turn waste into power.

Experts have studied these ideas for many years. Daniel A. Vallero wrote a book about this in 2010. He called it a biosystems approach. The International Society for Environmental Biotechnology also helps set rules for this work. They look at how to use and regulate these biological systems. They want to make sure these tools are used in a responsible way.

There are many real-world uses for these tiny workers. Some microbes live near oil wells or pipelines. These microbes can actually eat oil to get energy. This helps clean up oil spills in the ocean. Other microbes can eat pesticides in farm soil. Scientists can even find special genes in these microbes. They can move these genes into other cells to help make medicine.

We must be careful when we change nature. Humans have used breeding to improve crops for a long time. Now we use modern genetic modification to help plants grow more food. However, adding new microbes can change the balance of an area. This might disrupt the natural harmony of a place. Scientists must perform a careful risk assessment to keep us safe.
