Occupational medicine

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Occupational and Environmental Medicine is a special kind of doctor work. It focuses on preventing and treating sicknesses caused by jobs. These doctors study how work affects our health. They want to keep workers safe and well. This field is also known as OEM. It is a very important part of modern medicine.

These doctors follow a specific way of working. First, they learn about hazards in a workplace. A hazard is something that can cause harm. They study the toxic properties of materials people use. Next, they check if a person is fit for their job. They also diagnose and treat any work-related injuries. Finally, they teach people about health and safety rules.

This field became much more important after the Industrial Revolution. During that time, many people worked in new factories. These workers often became very ill. Some even died because of things they touched or breathed at work. This led to efforts to understand and prevent these harms. In 1700, a physician named Bernardino Ramazzini wrote the first textbook. It was called De Morbis Artificum Diatriba.

Many different groups use these specialized doctors today. The US military employs them to help their workers. In the United States, groups like OSHA and NIOSH use them too. OSHA stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. NIOSH is the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Other places like Moscow have their own research institutes. Doctors also advise many international groups and unions.

You might see this work in action in your own life. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic made this work very visible. The illness spread in ways linked to where people work. This meant workplaces had to change their safety practices. These doctors help manage how health services are delivered. They also help people get justice for work-related illnesses. Their goal is to promote wellness for everyone at work.
