When someone gets hurt, a team of experts works together. This team might include orthopedic surgeons and athletic trainers. They also use physical therapists and rehabilitation specialists. These experts help a person heal and return to their normal activities. They treat problems with bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They can even help with illnesses like asthma or diabetes. Some doctors use a method called PRICE to help with injuries. This stands for protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation.

This field has very old roots in history. Doctors helped athletes in ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian societies. However, it only became a formal specialty in the 20th century. Continental European countries were the first to form medical groups for sport. Germany may have had the first society in 1912. Later, in the 1920s, Germany tried to train many doctors in this area. This plan failed because there was not enough money during the Depression.

Italy was the first country to make sports medicine a distinct specialty in 1958. Today, it is a recognized medical specialty in over 50 countries. In Australia and New Zealand, it is a stand-alone specialty. The United States treats it as a subspecialty of other fields. These primary fields include family practice, orthopedics, and physiatry. In May 2024, the European Union approved new rules for training. These rules allow qualifications to be recognized across 11 different countries.

Learning to be a sports medicine doctor requires much study. In Europe, doctors often spend four years gaining specific experience. They might study internal medicine, cardiology, or emergency medicine. They also learn about clinical nutrition and orthopedics. This training helps them understand how the body moves and stays strong. By studying these many areas, they can keep people safe while they play. They help athletes perform better and stay healthy for a long time.
