It focuses on helping people who have sudden illnesses or injuries. These patients need medical attention right away. Emergency physicians, often called ER doctors, treat people of all ages. They handle many different kinds of health problems. They do not always know what is wrong when a patient arrives. This is why they must be ready for anything at any time.

These doctors follow a very busy way of working. First, they must stabilize a patient to keep them safe. They might start resuscitation to help someone breathe or keep their heart beating. They also provide early interventions during the most critical phase of an illness. Many doctors work in hospital emergency departments or intensive care units. Some work in ambulances or urgent care clinics. They must be able to do many different tasks very quickly.

Learning this specialty is a long and difficult process. Doctors must learn skills from many other types of medicine. They might use surgery to fix a deep cut. They may set a broken bone or treat a heart attack. They even learn to use ultrasound to see inside the body. They might manage a stroke or help a pregnant patient. This wide range of knowledge helps them treat almost any sudden problem.

This field has a very interesting history.

During the French Revolution, Dominique Jean Larrey helped wounded soldiers. He used fast carriages to move them to medical care quickly. People call him the Father of Emergency Medicine. In the United States, Dr. James DeWitt Mills helped start a 24/7 care plan in 1961. Later, the first emergency medicine residency program began in 1970 at the University of Cincinnati. In 1979, emergency medicine became a recognized specialty in the US.

Today, emergency medicine looks different depending on where you live. In the United States, doctors might work for hospitals or private groups. In the United Kingdom, most consultants work for the National Health Service. In places like Australia, doctors are often salaried employees of the government. Some doctors even choose very specific paths called sub-specialties. They might study disaster medicine or sports medicine.
