It focuses on people who need help right away. These doctors treat injuries or illnesses that happen suddenly. They work with people of all ages. They might work in a hospital emergency department. Some work in clinics or even in ambulances.

These doctors must know a lot about many things. They might fix a broken bone. They might treat a heart attack or a stroke. They even learn how to use ultrasound, which is a way to see inside the body using sound. Because they see many different problems, they must be ready for anything.

This field is still quite new. Long ago, other types of doctors covered these cases. In the 1800s, a man named Dominique Jean Larrey helped wounded soldiers. He used fast carriages to move them to care. People call him the Father of Emergency Medicine. Today, many doctors choose to study this special path.
