They are a key part of emergency medical services, or EMS. Most paramedics work in ambulances to reach people quickly. Their main goal is to stabilize patients with life-threatening injuries. After they help the person, they transport them to a hospital for more care. This job is very important for keeping people safe during emergencies.

How a paramedic works depends on where they live in the world. In the Anglo-American model, paramedics are autonomous decision-makers. This means they can make important choices about care on their own. In the United Kingdom and South Africa, they are seen as an autonomous health profession. Other places use a Franco-German model. In Germany, paramedics work with backup from a doctor. This doctor might be there in person or help through a system called Tele-Notarzt.

The history of this job shows how much it has changed. In the past, the role was often just about moving patients to a hospital. Over time, the job moved toward providing advanced treatments right in the field. In some places, paramedics even help prevent people from needing a hospital at all. They might prescribe certain medicines or refer patients to specialists. This is a big change from the older way of doing things.

Being a paramedic can be a hard job for the body. Every year, more than 22,000 EMS providers visit the emergency room for work injuries.

Many suffer from back or neck strains due to lifting heavy patients. They also face risks from infectious diseases like COVID-19, flu, or Hepatitis. About 6,000 EMS workers are at risk from blood-borne pathogens like HIV. To stay safe, they use personal protective equipment, or PPE. This includes things like N95 masks, gloves, and safety goggles.

Paramedics also face many different types of stress. They often see accidents, violence, or medical emergencies. These events can lead to mental health struggles like anxiety or burnout.

They might even face post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. To help, many use support systems like peer counseling. Talking to other workers who understand their job can help them stay strong. This helps them continue to provide the most needed services to their community.
