Firefighters are also part of this group. They include search and rescue members too. Medical workers like EMTs and paramedics are vital. In some places, doctors and nurses are also called first responders.

There are many ways to be a first responder. Some people work in cities or towns. Others help in the wild. We call these people wilderness first responders. They provide care in remote places. They know how to help people without using motors.

Some early uses appeared in newspapers. The Boston Globe used the term in August 1973. It wrote about ambulance rules in Massachusetts. Another paper called the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel used a similar term in March 1972. In April 1973, the Burlington Free Press wrote about a volunteer group. These early stories helped the name become common.

Being a first responder is a hard job. It can cause a lot of stress. These workers must stay healthy in mind and body. They also face risks from sickness. In 2003, they were among the first to see the SARS virus. They cared for people who had it. Later, they faced the COVID-19 pandemic. To stay safe, they use many tools. They use masks and wash their hands often. They also keep a safe distance from others.

First responders are part of a bigger system. They arrive first to help. After they work, second responders arrive. These second responders help with cleanup and preparation. This teamwork makes sure emergencies are handled well. It is a way that people work together to stay safe. Every job in the chain is important for the community. From the police to the snow plow drivers, everyone plays a part.
