This work covers many different areas of the world. Some teams focus on finding people lost in high mountains. Other teams work in cities to help people trapped in broken buildings. These specialists must watch for dangers like broken gas lines or live wires.

There are even teams that work on battlefields during wars. This work is a way to provide aid to anyone in imminent danger.

Rescue teams use many different tools to do their jobs. Ground teams might search through forests or over thin ice. They sometimes use special search and rescue dogs to help them find people.

In the ocean, teams use boats and large ships. They may also use aircraft like planes or helicopters to find people from the sky.

Some helicopters use a hoist to lift people up to safety. This is called air-sea rescue when planes and boats work together. It is a very organized way to save lives.

People have been trying to help others in trouble for a long time. One of the first famous stories happened in 1656. A Dutch ship called the Vergulde Draeck wrecked near Australia. People tried three different missions to help, but they were not successful. Much later, in 1945, a new way to help arrived. A pilot named Dmitry "Jimmy" Viner flew a Sikorsky R-5 helicopter. He performed the first civilian helicopter rescue in history. He used a special hoist to save five crew members from an oil barge.

Sometimes, rescue missions are very large and difficult. In 1983, a Korean Air Lines plane was shot down near Sakhalin. Many ships and planes from different countries joined the search. In 2009, an Air France flight was lost in the Atlantic Ocean. In 2014, the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 became the largest search and rescue mission ever.

These events show how hard it can be to find people in huge areas. Even when they do not find everyone, these missions show how countries work together.

Today, different groups have special rules for how they help. In Australia, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre manages many searches. They look after a huge area of the ocean.

This area is about 11 percent of the Earth's surface. In Canada, the Coast Guard and the Armed Forces work together to save people. They use planes like the CC-115 Buffalo to help.

All these groups follow rules to make sure people get the help they need. They turn a scary situation into a chance for safety.
