A coast guard is a special group that keeps the sea safe.

Every country has its own rules for these groups. Some coast guards are part of the military. Other groups are civilian organizations. Their jobs can change depending on where they work. Some focus on search and rescue to help people in trouble. Others focus on enforcing laws and checking ship safety. They might even help with border control.

Many of these groups use ships and aircraft. They might fly helicopters or seaplanes to reach people.

Coast guards have many different ways of working. Some act as a naval reserve during wartime. They might protect harbors or watch the coast. Other groups only have a small role in law enforcement. For example, the Irish Coast Guard mostly checks if ships are safe. In some places, the coast guard does not do the rescue itself. They might just coordinate the work. In those cases, civilian groups like the Royal National Lifeboat Institution provide the boats.

History shows how these groups began with very specific jobs. In the United Kingdom, the group started in 1809. It was called the Waterguard at that time. Their main job was to stop smuggling. Smuggling is when people bring goods like tobacco or brandy into a country in secret. To save lives, they used a tool called a Manby mortar.

This tool fired a line from the shore to a wrecked ship. In 1822, the name changed to the Coastguard. By 1845, they worked under the Admiralty.

The United States Coast Guard has a different history. It was created in 1915 by joining two agencies. The first was the United States Revenue Cutter Service. It started way back in 1790. The second was the United States Life-Saving Service from 1848. This group had crews along the East Coast to save people.

Later, the Coast Guard took over the United States Lighthouse Service in 1939. They also took on more duties in 1942 and 1946. This helped them become the specialized military branch they are today.

You can often spot a coast guard boat from far away. Many groups use bright colors to stand out. They do not want to be confused with the navy. Since 1964, many have used a high-contrast design called a racing stripe.

This stripe is often on the outside of the ship's hull. In 2009, researchers found that 61 nations used some kind of stripe. This helps people see them quickly during an emergency. Whether they are in Canada or Australia, these markings help signal that help is near.
