These ships serve as medical treatment facilities on the water. Most are run by the navies of different countries. They are often sent to work in or near war zones. This allows doctors to reach people who need help quickly. They are very important for providing care when land hospitals are too far away.

In the past, these ships worked in a very different way. During the 1600s, the British used small ships to care for the sick. They removed internal walls to make more room inside. They also cut holes in the decks to help air move through the ship.

These early ships carried a surgeon and several assistants. They provided basic things like soap, bandages, and clean sheets. However, the food was often very poor. One surgeon in the 1690s complained that the meat was rotten and the bread was too hard.

As time went on, hospital ships became much more advanced. Modern versions began to appear during the Crimean War in the 1850s. The first ships with real medical facilities were steamships named HMS Melbourne and HMS Mauritius.

These ships were much better than older versions. They had spacious rooms for patients and even an operating theatre for surgery. By the late 1800s, ships used modern tools like chloroform for medicine. This helped make surgery much easier for the patients.

During the World Wars, hospital ships were used on a huge scale. Many large passenger liners were changed into hospital ships to help more people.

For example, the RMS Mauretania was a famous ship used this way. The British Royal Navy had 77 such ships by the end of the First World War. In the United States, the Navy built its first purpose-built hospital ship, the USS Relief, in 1921.

These ships helped move many people from battle zones to safer places.

There are strict international rules to keep hospital ships safe. According to the Hague Convention, these ships must be painted white.

Military hospital ships have a green band, while relief ships have a red band. They must also fly a red cross flag to show their purpose. These marks tell everyone that the ship is there to help, not to fight. It is a war crime to attack a ship that follows these rules.
