Helipad

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A helipad is a special landing area for certain aircraft. These include helicopters and other vertical lift aircraft. These planes can land straight down on a surface.

A helipad provides a flat and hard surface for safe landings. It is usually built away from obstacles like trees or poles.

Some very large landing areas are called vertiports. One example is Vertiport Chicago, which opened in 2015. These places help aircraft move people and goods safely.

Many different places use these landing pads every day. Hospitals often have them to move sick people quickly. These are called medical evacuations or air ambulance transfers.

Some pads sit on the roofs of tall buildings. These can help people escape during a large fire. Large ships and oil platforms also use them for boarding. On a ship, the pad is called a helideck or helodeck.

Even police departments use them as a base for their helicopters.

Building a helipad requires careful planning and specific materials. Most pads are made of strong concrete. They are marked with a circle or the letter "H". These marks make them easy to see from the sky.

Some people even build temporary pads from timber. This helps wildfire fighters get supplies to remote areas. In very tough spots, pads can be built on ice. Some pads are even portable with a rugged frame. These can land on hills or even boggy ground.

There are many important facts about how these pads work. Rooftop pads often show a large two-digit number. This number tells the pilot the weight limit in thousands of pounds. A second number might show the maximum rotor diameter in feet.

Aviation authorities give these pads special location identifiers. The Federal Aviation Administration does this in the United States. Transport Canada does this in Canada. The International Civil Aviation Organization also helps with these names.

Helipads can be found in very extreme places around the world. India built a helipad on the Siachen Glacier. This is the highest helipad in the entire world. It sits at 21,000 feet above sea level.

This is a very high place for an aircraft to land. You might think of a regular airport runway first. But a helipad is different because it does not need a long path. It only needs a clear, flat spot to work.
