V/STOL

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some airplanes do not need long runways to fly. We call these V/STOL aircraft. This name stands for vertical and/or short take-off and landing.

These planes are very useful for the military. They can land in forest clearings or on small ships. This helps them respond to jobs much faster. They do not always need big ships with catapults to launch.

There are different ways these planes work. Some can perform VTOL, which means vertical take-off and landing. These planes can hover in one spot like a helicopter.

Other planes use STOVL, or short take-off and vertical landing. This method uses a short runway to help the plane. A plane might use a ramp called a ski-jump to help it lift.

This way allows the plane to carry more fuel and heavy gear. Using a runway makes the flight more efficient than going straight up.

People have dreamed of vertical flight for a long time. Leonardo da Vinci even drew sketches of it in his notebooks.

The first manned helicopters flew in 1907. Many inventors tried to build special planes later on. Henry Berliner worked on a design between 1922 and 1925. Nikola Tesla even had a patent for this in 1928. In the 1950s, many companies tested new fighter jets. Some of these tests, like the XFY Pogo, ended when contracts were cancelled. It took many years of hard work to make these planes real.

Many famous aircraft use these special skills today. The Hawker Siddeley Harrier is a very well-known example.

The F-35B Lightning II is another modern jet that can land vertically. There are 16 aircraft carriers in the world that use these planes. Nine are in the United States and two are in Japan.

Italy and the United Kingdom also have two carriers each. Spain has one carrier that uses these special aircraft. The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is a famous tiltrotor plane.

It uses rotors that tilt to fly like a helicopter or a plane.

Think about how a helicopter stays in the air. It uses spinning blades to push air down. V/STOL planes use similar ideas but move much faster.

Some use thrust vectoring, which means they can point their engine power. This lets them change direction easily. New technology is even working on electric planes called eVTOLs. These might one day act like air taxis for people. They will use new ways to move through our skies. Scientists are always finding new ways to make flying easier.
