Helicopter

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A helicopter is a special kind of rotorcraft. It uses horizontally spinning rotors to create lift and thrust.

This unique design lets it do many amazing things. A helicopter can take off and land vertically. It can also hover in one spot in the air. It can even fly forward, backward, or sideways.

These skills are very helpful for pilots. They can land in crowded cities or isolated areas. Most airplanes need a long runway to fly. A helicopter does not need a runway at all.

How does a helicopter stay steady while flying? Most models use one main rotor on top. This rotor provides the lift to go up. However, the spinning rotor creates a force called torque. Torque tries to spin the body of the craft in the opposite direction.

To fix this, most helicopters use a tail rotor. This smaller rotor sits at the end of a tail boom. It pushes or pulls against the tail to counter the torque. This keeps the helicopter pointing in the right direction. Some designs use two main rotors spinning in opposite directions instead.

People have been working on these machines for a long time. The Focke-Wulf Fw 61 was the first successful and controllable helicopter in 1936.

Later, in 1942, the Sikorsky R-4 became the first to reach full-scale production. Igor Sikorsky was a very important person in this history. Between 1939 and 1943, he worked on the VS-300. This model used one main rotor and one tail rotor.

This specific setup became the most common way to build helicopters. It is the design we see most often today.

Inside the machine, an engine provides all the power. Early engines were small, like rubber bands or steam engines. These were not strong enough to lift people.

Later, engineers used piston engines from cars and airplanes. In December 1951, the Kaman K-225 introduced the turboshaft engine. This is a type of turbine engine that is very powerful but very light.

Most modern helicopters use these turbine engines now. A transmission connects the engine to the rotors. It uses gears to slow down the engine's fast spin. The engine might spin at 50,000 RPM. The main rotor usually spins much slower, between 300 and 600 RPM.

Today, you can see many different types of helicopters. Some are huge and carry many people. Others are small drones used for photography.

You might hear people call them "choppers" or "helis." In the military, they often use the word "helo."

Whether they are rescuing people or taking pictures, they are incredible machines. They show how smart engineering can help us move through the sky in new ways.
