He was born in Châlons-sur-Marne on 15 October 1884. He went to school at École Centrale Paris. This school helped him learn about building things. He was very good at making new tools. In 1917, he patented an electric stroboscope. This tool uses light flashes. He also made a camera that could take 1,000 frames per second. These inventions showed how smart he was.

Oehmichen is best known for his work with helicopters.

His first successful helicopter flight was on 18 February 1921. In 1922, he flew a machine called Oehmichen No.2. This machine used large rotors to lift it up. It also had small rotors mounted vertically. These small rotors spun in the opposite direction. This design helped make it a reliable flying machine. This idea helped lead to the tail rotor used today.

He broke many records with his flying machines. On 14 April 1924, he set a new record for distance. He flew 360 meters in a straight line. A few days later, he flew 525 meters. This was a huge achievement for that time. On 4 May 1924, he won a prize of 90,000 French Francs. He won this for a special flight. He flew a triangular path that was 1 km long. This flight lasted 7 minutes and 40 seconds.

Oehmichen never stopped inventing new things. In 1931, he made a type of blimp. He called this invention the "Hélicostat."

The blimp used four movable propellers to steer. It could hover in the air. It could also take off and land without a ground crew. He was also a biologist who studied living things. He looked at how dragonfly wings work. He wanted to see how insects fly.

He spent 30 years working at the Collège de France in Paris. He wrote books about birds and insects. One book was called "Nos maîtres les oiseaux." This title means "Our masters, the birds." It was about how animals fly. He also wrote about how humans use machines. He lived until 10 July 1955. He died in Paris. His work helped us understand how things move through the air.
