He studied at a school called École Centrale Paris. In 1917, he made a new camera. It could take 1,000 pictures every second. He also made a stroboscope. A stroboscope is a tool that uses bright flashes of light.

Oehmichen is most famous for his work with helicopters. In 1922, he flew a machine called Oehmichen No.2.

It had large rotors to lift it up. It also had small rotors that spun the opposite way. This helped the machine fly well. This idea helped lead to the tail rotor used today. In 1924, he flew in a large triangle. The flight was about one kilometer long. It took him 7 minutes and 40 seconds. He even made a flight with two passengers.

He also studied bugs. He looked at how dragonfly wings work. He wanted to learn how animals fly. Later, he made a blimp called a Hélicostat. It used four propellers to move. It could land and take off all by itself.
