A helicopter is a type of aircraft that uses spinning rotors to fly.

These rotors provide lift to go up and thrust to move. This lets helicopters land in small or crowded spots. They do not need a long runway like a plane.

Most helicopters use one main rotor on top. They also use a small tail rotor. This tail rotor helps with anti-torque. Torque is a force that tries to spin the body of the craft. The tail rotor pushes against this force to keep the helicopter steady.

An engine provides the power for flight. Many modern helicopters use a turboshaft engine. This is a type of turbine engine that drives a rotor. These engines are light and very strong. A transmission connects the engine to the rotors. It uses gears to change the speed of the engine. The engine spins very fast, but the rotors spin much slower. This system makes sure the rotors turn at the right speed to fly.
