Military helicopters are built for special jobs. Some are made just for war. Others are changed to do new tasks.

One common job is airlift. This means moving people or cargo. These helicopters do not need a runway. They can land in hard places. They can carry things inside or hang them underneath.

Other helicopters have different roles. Attack helicopters use guns and rockets. They often have a narrow body.

Observation helicopters help find things. They use cameras and sensors to see. Some even use heat-sensing cameras.

Some helicopters work at sea. These are called maritime helicopters. They fly from ships like destroyers. They can look for submarines using sonar. Sonar is a tool that uses sound to find things under water.

To stay safe, many have armor. Armor is strong material that protects parts. They often protect the pilots and engines. Some helicopters use two engines. If one fails, they can still fly.
