Military helicopters are special aircraft built for many different jobs. Some are made from the start for military use. Other helicopters are changed from regular models to do new tasks. These aircraft play a huge role in land, sea, and air operations. The most common job is airlift, which means moving people or supplies.

They can move things to places that do not have a runway. This makes them very useful for moving troops and cargo quickly.

There are many ways these machines work to finish a mission. Transport helicopters can carry cargo inside or hang it underneath using a slung load. If the ground is too rough to land, they use rescue hoists to pick people up.

Attack helicopters are built differently to carry weapons like rockets or guns. Some have a narrow body so the pilot and weapons officer can sit one behind the other. Observation helicopters use sensors and cameras to find targets.

These tools help them see in low light or use heat to find things.

Engineers have found clever ways to make new helicopters over time. To save money, they often use the same basic frame for different roles. They might stretch or shorten the body to change how much it carries.

They can also add new engines or electronics to an old design. For example, the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, known as the "Huey," led to many other versions. Modern aircraft like the Augusta Westland AW101 "Merlin" can change roles in just a few hours. This flexibility helps military forces stay ready for any job.

Safety and equipment are very important for these aircraft. Most military helicopters have armor to protect the pilots and the engines.

They may also use Kevlar to protect fuel lines and cables. Some helicopters, like the Blackhawk family, use two engines for safety. If one engine fails, the aircraft can often keep flying on the other one.

This design helps protect the middle parts of the helicopter from damage.

Helicopters also work in the ocean as maritime aircraft. These are built to handle salt water and can fly from ships like destroyers or frigates.

Some use dunking sonar to find submarines under the waves. In the 1960s, new engines and transistor technology changed how these worked. This allowed smaller helicopters to fly from smaller ships. Today, they can work almost on their own to protect the fleet.
