Military aviation is the design and use of flying machines for war.

These machines allow nations to conduct aerial warfare. They also provide a way to move cargo and supplies. This is called airlift capacity. It helps get tools to soldiers in a war theater. There are many types of aircraft used today. These include bombers, fighters, and transports. Other types include trainer aircraft and reconnaissance planes.

Flying in war started with lighter-than-air balloons. In 1794, the French used a balloon called l'Entreprenant. It helped them watch Austrian troop movements. Balloons were used often during the American Civil War too. Later, heavier-than-air aircraft began to change everything. The U.S. Army Signal Corps bought a Wright Model A on August 2, 1909. This was the first military aircraft in history.

By 1911, Italians used planes for reconnaissance and bombing. Captain Carlo Piazza flew the first aerial reconnaissance mission that year. Later, Giulio Gavotti dropped the first aerial bomb in Libya.

Aircraft roles grew very fast during the World Wars. In World War I, planes did artillery spotting and anti-submarine patrols. By World War II, technology improved a great deal. Engineers made better powerplants and better aerodynamics. This led to faster and stronger planes. New roles appeared like weather reconnaissance and flying lifeboats.

The Allies even used long-range maritime patrol aircraft. These planes used radar and sonobuoys to find submarines. This helped them win the Battle of the Atlantic. Some major battles were decided only by aircraft. The Battle of Britain is one famous example.

New inventions changed how pilots fly today. The jet engine and helicopters were major advances from World War II. The Cold War also pushed countries to build better machines. The United States and the U.S.S.R. competed to make fast planes. This led to the use of electronic computers. These computers helped with things like communications and data processing.

In the 1960s, people thought missiles might replace manned planes. However, fighters with guns returned to use in the 1970s. Now, many planes use stealth technology to stay hidden. This helps them perform their jobs more effectively.

Modern air forces have many specific jobs to do. Fighters work to maintain air superiority. This means they control the sky. Bombers carry large payloads of bombs to targets.

Transport aircraft move troops and supplies over long distances. Some planes can even refuel other planes while they are flying. This is done by refueling aircraft like the KC-135. Helicopters are also very useful for moving people. They can land in places where other planes cannot. Many nations use an air force to protect their land. Some even use space-based tools like satellites for reconnaissance.
