Bombers carry large payloads of bombs but may sacrifice speed to do so. Transport aircraft move troops and supplies, often using pallets for quick unloading. Some specialized aircraft, called refueling aircraft, can refuel other planes while they are in flight. Examples include the KC-135 and the KC-46. 
Helicopters and specialized craft also play vital roles. Helicopters can transport troops to areas where fixed-wing planes cannot land. They are also used for anti-submarine tasks on smaller warships. Other roles include reconnaissance, which uses infrared and radar sensors to gather intelligence. This job is now often shared with spy satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles. Additionally, maritime patrol aircraft use sonar to control sea lanes and perform search and rescue.
The history of military aviation is a cycle of innovation and testing. The Cold War drove the United States and the U.S.S.R. to develop advanced technology. This era saw the rise of the jet engine and electronic computers. In the 1960s, many expected missiles to replace manned interceptors. However, missiles lacked flexibility, so gun-armed fighters returned in the 1970s. Today, modern forces often use stealth technology to remain undetected. Effective airpower has proven decisive in recent conflicts like the Gulf War.
