Military aviation is the design, development, and use of aircraft for warfare. It includes the national ability to conduct aerial combat and provide logistical support. This support is often called airlift capacity. It allows a nation to move cargo and supplies to forces in a war theater. Airpower is the intersection of these transport capabilities and actual combat aircraft.

Before heavier-than-air planes existed, military aviation used lighter-than-air balloons. In 1794, the French used a balloon named l'Entreprenant to monitor Austrian troops. Lighter-than-air craft were used regularly during the American Civil War. Eventually, heavier-than-air aircraft became more common. On August 2, 1909, the U.S. Army Signal Corps purchased a Wright Model A. This became the first military aircraft in history.

Early aviation roles were very limited. By 1911, Italian forces used aircraft for reconnaissance and bombing. Captain Carlo Piazza flew the first aerial reconnaissance mission in October 1911. Later that year, Giulio Gavotti dropped the first aerial bomb in Libya. During World War I, aircraft roles expanded to include artillery spotting and anti-submarine patrols. By the end of that war, technology moved at a frenzied pace. The first all-metal cantilevered airplanes entered service as the war concluded.

World War II brought massive technological leaps in powerplants and aerodynamics. These improvements allowed aircraft to take on entirely new roles. Some planes became flying lifeboats or performed weather reconnaissance. Long-range maritime patrol aircraft were developed to fight U-boats. These planes used radar, sonobuoys, and Leigh Lights to find submerged submarines. This technology was vital during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Different types of aircraft serve very specific purposes today. Fighters are designed for speed and maneuverability to maintain air superiority. Bombers carry large payloads of bombs but may sacrifice speed to do so. Transport aircraft move troops and supplies, often using pallets for quick unloading. Some specialized aircraft, called refueling aircraft, can refuel other planes while they are in flight. Examples include the KC-135 and the KC-46.

Helicopters and specialized craft also play vital roles. Helicopters can transport troops to areas where fixed-wing planes cannot land. They are also used for anti-submarine tasks on smaller warships. Other roles include reconnaissance, which uses infrared and radar sensors to gather intelligence. This job is now often shared with spy satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles. Additionally, maritime patrol aircraft use sonar to control sea lanes and perform search and rescue.

The history of military aviation is a cycle of innovation and testing. The Cold War drove the United States and the U.S.S.R. to develop advanced technology. This era saw the rise of the jet engine and electronic computers. In the 1960s, many expected missiles to replace manned interceptors. However, missiles lacked flexibility, so gun-armed fighters returned in the 1970s. Today, modern forces often use stealth technology to remain undetected. Effective airpower has proven decisive in recent conflicts like the Gulf War.
