Military aircraft are machines used by legal or insurrectionary military forces. These machines can have fixed wings or rotary wings, like a helicopter. They are divided into two main categories: combat aircraft and non-combat aircraft. Combat aircraft are designed to engage in warfare. They often carry ordnance, which means weapons like bombs or missiles. Non-combat aircraft focus on support roles. They might carry supplies, perform rescues, or monitor the environment.

Combat aircraft, often called warplanes, have several specialized types. Fighters are built for air-to-air combat. Their main job is to destroy enemy aircraft. They also provide escort for bombers or perform ground attacks. Modern fighters like the F-35 Lightning II can attack from great distances. Attack aircraft focus on supporting ground troops. They may strike targets far behind enemy lines. Attack helicopters are a specific type that targets enemy armor.

Bombers represent another major type of combat aircraft. They are usually larger and heavier than fighters. Because of their size, they are less maneuverable. Their primary purpose is to carry large payloads of bombs or cruise missiles. Bombers vary in size from light to heavy. Some, like the B-2 Spirit, use stealth technology. Stealth helps them avoid detection by enemy radar. Some bombers require only one pilot, while others need larger crews.

Modern technology has created even more complex aircraft types. Multirole aircraft can switch between air-to-air and air-to-ground roles. They might even change roles during a single mission. Unmanned combat aerial vehicles, or UCAVs, are also common. These have no crew inside the aircraft. Instead, a remote operator controls them from a distance. They are used for precision airstrikes and other drone warfare.

Specialized roles exist for electronic and maritime operations. Electronic warfare aircraft are modified to disrupt enemy radar and radio systems. An example is the EA-18G Growler. Maritime patrol aircraft are designed for long flights over the ocean. They search for ships or submarines. Some are built specifically for this, like the Kawasaki P-1. Others are modified civilian planes, such as the Boeing P-8 Poseidon.

History shows how much flight has changed. In 1783, the first practical aircraft were hot-air and hydrogen balloons. The French Aerostatic Corps used observation balloons in 1794. During World War I, German Zeppelins conducted air raids. After the Wright brothers flew, militaries quickly adopted powered flight. In 1909, the U.S. Army bought the Wright Military Flyer. This was a two-seat aircraft used for observation.

Non-combat aircraft are essential for logistics and safety. Transport aircraft carry troops and supplies. They can use pallets to load cargo quickly. Some aircraft can even drop cargo using parachutes. This allows delivery without needing to land. Aerial tankers are also vital. They can refuel other aircraft while they are in flight.

Finally, some aircraft act as mobile command centers. Airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft use powerful radar. They can detect ships and planes hundreds of miles away. These systems help direct fighter strikes and manage the battle space. They function much like an airport traffic controller. This allows military leaders to maintain command over their forces from high altitudes.
