Military aircraft are machines used by armies for many different jobs. They can have fixed wings like a plane or spinning blades like a helicopter. Some are built for combat, which means they are used in fighting. These are often called warplanes. Other aircraft serve in support roles. These planes help by carrying things or finding people.

Combat aircraft work in several specific ways. Fighters are designed to destroy other aircraft in the air. They are fast and can carry guns, rockets, or missiles. They also protect bombers during their missions. Bombers are much larger and heavier than fighters. Their main job is to carry huge loads of bombs or missiles to targets on the ground. Some special bombers use stealth. This means they are very hard for enemy radar to see.

History shows how these machines have changed over time. In 1783, people first used hot-air and hydrogen balloons for military work. The French Aerostatic Corps flew an observation balloon in 1794. Later, German Zeppelin airships were used in World War I. After the Wright brothers flew their first plane, armies became very interested in powered flight. In 1909, the United States Army bought the Wright Military Flyer. This was a two-seat plane used for watching from above.

There are many different types of aircraft used today. Some have no crew inside at all. These are called unmanned combat aerial vehicles, or UCAVs. A person controls them from a far distance. Other planes are used for electronic warfare. These help by making enemy radar and radios stop working well. There are also maritime patrol aircraft. These fly over the ocean for a long time to find ships or submarines.

Non-combat aircraft are also very important for an army. Transport planes carry troops and supplies to different places. They can even drop cargo using parachutes so they do not have to land. Some planes are tankers. They can give fuel to other planes while they are still flying. There are also planes that act like flying radar stations. These are called airborne early warning and control aircraft. They help leaders see ships and planes from hundreds of miles away.
