Surveillance aircraft are tools used to watch and gather information from the sky.

These machines can be planes, balloons, or unmanned aerial vehicles, which are often called UAVs. Military forces and government agencies use them for many jobs. They might perform maritime patrol over the ocean or watch a battlefield. They also help with law enforcement and spotting artillery. Most of these aircraft do not carry many weapons for defense. Instead, they focus on seeing things that people on the ground cannot see.

These aircraft work by using special tools to collect data. Some use cameras to take pictures from high up. Other planes use radar to see objects far away.

In the ocean, aircraft are better than ships because they can see over the horizon. This means they can find targets hundreds of miles further than a boat can. Some modern drones even use sensors and artificial intelligence to help. They can also use lights to see into dark areas. This helps officers see where people might be hiding.

Humans have used the sky to watch the world for a long time. In the 1790s, the French used hydrogen-filled balloons for reconnaissance.

One balloon, named L'Entreprenant, stayed in the air for nine hours during a battle in 1794. Later, in 1898, William Eddy used a camera on a kite to take the first military aerial photos. During World War I, planes like the Rumpler Taube were used to take photographs. These photos helped soldiers make maps and understand where enemies were. Some called the Taube the "first stealth plane" because its wings were hard to see.

History shows that these missions can be very difficult and dangerous. During the Cold War, the United States used the U2 aircraft to fly very high. It could fly at 70,000 feet to stay away from detection.

In 1962, a U2 camera captured images of missiles in Cuba. This event led to the Cuban Missile Crisis. Aerial reconnaissance was a hard job during this time. Between 1945 and 1977, more than forty reconnaissance aircraft were shot down. Out of 152 cryptologists who died during the Cold War, 64 were on these missions.

Today, surveillance technology is part of many different lives. The Coast Guard uses drones for search and rescue during environmental disasters.

Law enforcement agencies use drones to gather evidence or look at a room before entering. In recent conflicts, even small hobby drones like the DJI Mavic mini are used.

These small machines help people record videos or find enemy units. From giant planes to tiny drones, these tools help us understand what is happening on the ground and at sea.
