Out of 152 cryptologists who died during the Cold War, 64 were participating in aerial reconnaissance. 
Modern surveillance is used in many specific ways across the globe. In the South China Sea, the U.S. Air Force conducts sensitive reconnaissance operations. These missions monitor movements in the Indo-Pacific region. Aircraft like the RC-135 Rivet Joint and the U-2 are used for this purpose. These planes can change course within minutes, making them faster than satellites. In the conflict in Ukraine, different classes of drones are used frequently. NATO classifies Class I drones as those under 150 kilograms. Class III drones are larger, weighing more than 600 kilograms. Even small hobby drones are used to record videos and identify units. 
Surveillance technology connects to many broader fields of science and law. In law enforcement, drones help officers analyze the layout of a room. They can also provide light to dark areas to assist officers. However, the use of these drones is regulated by federal laws. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires specific licenses and certifications for operators. They also limit certain operations to under 400 feet. In the maritime field, the Coast Guard is developing an Unmanned Systems Strategic Plan. This plan aims to integrate AI and machine learning into future operations. This shows how surveillance is moving from simple observation to complex, automated data analysis.
