Reconnaissance aircraft are special planes built to gather information. People often call them spy planes. They do not carry weapons to fight. Instead, they use tools to see and hear things. Some planes use photography to take pictures of the ground. Other planes collect signals intelligence, which means they study electronic signals. They can also perform measurement and signature intelligence. Modern technology even lets some planes and UAVs watch things in real time.

These planes work in many different ways. One way is through visual observation. This is when people look out to scout for movement. Another way is using radar to find things. Some aircraft carry film cameras to take photos. This was the main way to get information for a long time. Some planes even use drones to do these jobs. These drones can fly without a person inside them.

People have used flying objects to scout for a long time. Before the 20th century, there were no powered planes. During the Napoleonic Wars, the French used balloons. In World War I, planes were the "eyes of the army." They helped ground troops by watching the battlefield. Back then, people used standard fighters or bombers for this. They just added film cameras to them.

History shows many famous planes and moments. In World War II, the PBY Catalina was a flying boat. U.S. Navy Catalinas spotted the Japanese fleet near Midway Island. This helped start the Battle of Midway in 1942. During the Cold War, the U.S. made the U-2 and SR-71. These planes monitored the Soviet Union. Other planes like the RB-47 and Boeing RC-135 were also built. The Soviet Union had its own plane called the Myasishchev M-55.

Today, the way we gather information has changed. Much of the big work is now done by satellites in space. For smaller jobs, people use UAVs, or drones. These drones were used successfully during Desert Storm operations. You might see drones used in many places today. They can watch a target and send info instantly. This is a big change from using old film cameras.
