Some large planes have a very special job. These aircraft are called penetrators. A penetrator is a long-range bomber. Its main goal is to fly into enemy lands. It must pass through enemy defenses. These planes must be able to survive in dangerous airspace. This makes them very important for long missions.

How does a penetrator work to stay safe? Many of these planes fly at a low altitude. This means they fly very close to the ground. Flying low helps them hide from radar. Radar is a tool used to track things. By staying low, the plane stays under the radar's view. This way, the plane can reach its goal without being seen.

The name for these planes has a history. The term became widely used with the Rockwell B-1 Lancer. This plane is a classic example of a penetrator design. Other planes have been used for this role too. Some versions of the F-111 Aardvark are tactical interdictors. These are different from the long-range penetrator designs. The B-1 Lancer helped set the standard for this class.

Many different aircraft fit into this group. The Tupolev Tu-160 is a very large member. The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress can also do this job. Some F-111 models are adapted for this role as well. Even the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit fits the definition. However, people do not usually call the B-2 a penetrator. These planes vary in size and how they are built.

We can see how this idea connects to new technology. Experts are now looking at a Next-Generation Bomber. Its mission is described as "penetrate and persist." This means the plane must fly in and stay for a while. It must be able to do its job over time. This is a very hard task for any aircraft. It builds on the ideas used by the B-1 Lancer.
