Some big planes are built for a special job. These are called penetrators. A penetrator is a long-range bomber. It is meant to fly into enemy lands. These planes must stay safe while they fly. Many fly at a low altitude. This means they fly close to the ground. Flying low helps them hide from radar. Radar is a tool used to track things.

The Rockwell B-1 Lancer is a classic example. This is the plane that first used the name. The Tu-160 is another very large plane in this group. Some other planes can do this job too. The Boeing B-52 and some F-111s can be used this way. Even the B-2 Spirit fits this group. But most people do not use the name for it.
