Some planes can do two big jobs at once. These are called strike fighters. They are multirole aircraft. This means they can do many tasks. A strike fighter can fight other planes in the air. It can also attack targets on the ground. This makes them very useful in war.

The name started to be used in navies long ago. In the 1940s, some navy planes could do both jobs. One was the Westland Wyvern.

In the 1970s, the U.S. Navy used the name more often. They used it for the F/A-18 Hornet. They even changed the names of their flying groups. They wanted to show these planes could attack the ground. Later, the name spread to other types of planes too. The F-15E Strike Eagle was once called a dual role fighter. Now, people call it a strike fighter. Modern planes like the F-35 use stealth. Stealth means they can hide from radar. This helps them do many missions safely.
