A strike fighter is a specific type of multirole combat aircraft. This means the plane is designed to perform several different missions. It functions as an attack aircraft to hit targets on the ground. It also acts as an air superiority fighter to fight other planes in the sky. This dual capability makes it distinct from a standard fighter-bomber. It is also related to the concept of an interdictor aircraft. However, strike fighters place a much heavier emphasis on aerial combat.

The mechanism of a strike fighter relies on its versatility. These aircraft are built to handle both air-to-air and air-to-surface tasks. They can fly into an area to conduct ground attacks. Once there, they can defend themselves against enemy aircraft. Some modern versions use stealth technology to perform these tasks. Stealth helps the aircraft hide from radar detection. This allows them to carry out reconnaissance missions more effectively. Reconnaissance involves gathering information about an area while remaining undetected.

There are several notable types of modern strike fighters in use today. The Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a well-known example. Another major aircraft is the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. This is a fifth-generation multirole fighter. It is capable of ground attack, reconnaissance, and air defense. Other nations also use strike fighters for their military needs. The Russian Sukhoi Su-34 is a prominent example. The Chinese Shenyang J-16 is another contemporary model. There is also the newer F-15EX Eagle II.

The history of the term "strike fighter" began in the 1940s. During this time, some navies used the phrase occasionally. They used it to describe fighter aircraft capable of air-to-surface strikes. Two examples from this era were the Westland Wyvern and the Blackburn Firebrand. The Blackburn Firecrest was also used in this way. In 1953, NATO used a different technical term. They called these planes light weight tactical strike fighters, or LWTSF. This was part of a specific NATO specification known as NBMR-1.

Many different designs were submitted for the 1953 NATO competition. These included the Aerfer Sagittario 2 and the Breguet Br.1001 Taon. Other entries were the Dassault Étendard VI and the Fiat G.91. The Sud-Est Baroudeur was also part of this group. The term eventually entered normal use within the United States Navy. This happened toward the end of the 1970s. It became the official description for the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. This helped clarify that the plane could fly as both a fighter and an attack plane.

In 1983, the U.S. Navy made a significant organizational change. They renamed every existing Fighter Attack Squadron to Strike Fighter Squadron. They did this to emphasize the air-to-surface mission. Previously, the "Fighter Attack" name caused confusion with pure "Fighter" designations. Pure fighters are meant only for air-to-air missions. This new name quickly spread to non-maritime military uses. The F-15E Strike Eagle followed a similar path. It was originally called a "dual role fighter." However, it soon became widely known as a strike fighter instead.

In 1995, a new program changed the direction of aircraft development. The U.S. military's Joint Advanced Strike Technology program was renamed. It became the Joint Strike Fighter program. This project led to the development of the F-35 Lightning II family. These aircraft are designed to handle many different roles at once. They bridge the gap between specialized attack planes and pure fighters. By combining these roles, strike fighters provide a flexible tool for modern air forces. They connect the need for ground power with the need for air defense.
