An assault rifle is a specialized type of select-fire firearm.

To be classified as an assault rifle, a weapon must meet specific criteria. It must be capable of selective fire, meaning the user can choose between different firing modes. It must use an intermediate-power cartridge, which is more powerful than a pistol round but less powerful than a full-sized rifle cartridge.

Finally, the ammunition must be supplied from a detachable box magazine. These characteristics allow the rifle to bridge the gap between submachine guns and traditional battle rifles.

The core mechanism of the assault rifle relies on the use of the intermediate cartridge.

In traditional warfare, many engagements occur at ranges under 300 meters. Older rifles used high-powered cartridges that were often overpowered for these close distances. By using a shorter, lighter cartridge, the assault rifle provides more controllable automatic fire. This reduction in muzzle impulse helps prevent the weapon from climbing too much during rapid shots. Additionally, the smaller size of the ammunition allows soldiers to carry a much higher volume of rounds.

Design features also play a vital role in how these weapons function.

The German StG 44 introduced several specific mechanical improvements. It utilized a stamped steel design, which made the weapon inexpensive and easy to mass-produce. It also featured a straight stock with the barrel positioned under the gas cylinder. This specific layout helped reduce the turning moment of recoil against the shooter's shoulder. Furthermore, the inclusion of a pistol grip allowed for more secure handling during automatic fire. These features combined to create a highly effective, compact combat tool.

The history of these weapons traces back to early 20th-century designs.

In 1915, Vladimir Grigoryevich Fyodorov designed the Fedorov Avtomat. This was one of the first operational automatic rifles and saw limited use in World War I. However, the first successful implementation of the modern assault rifle concept occurred during World War II. The German StG 44, an evolution of the Mkb 42, was the first to see widespread service. It fired the 7.92×33mm Kurz round, a revolutionary cartridge created by shortening the standard Mauser round. Approximately 500,000 of these rifles were produced by the end of the war.

Following World War II, the Soviet Union developed its own highly successful systems.

Soviet forces were deeply impressed by the German StG 44 after capturing them. On July 15, 1943, a captured MP-43 was demonstrated to the Soviet arms committee. This led designers like Nikolay Elizarov and Pavel Ryazanov to develop the 7.62×39mm M43 cartridge. This effort eventually resulted in the AK-47, which the Soviet Army officially adopted in 1949. The AK-47 remains one of the most used assault rifles in the world today. It has many successful derivatives, such as the AKM and the AK-74.

The United States also contributed major designs to the evolution of the rifle.

While NATO countries initially used battle rifles after World War II, the Vietnam War changed their approach. The introduction of the M16 in 1964 prompted many NATO nations to adopt assault rifles. The M16 fires the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge and is the most produced assault rifle in that specific caliber. These developments helped shift global military standards. By the end of the 20th century, the assault rifle had replaced both full-powered rifles and submachine guns in most military roles.

It is important to distinguish assault rifles from other types of firearms.

For example, the FN FAL and the H&K G3 are considered battle rifles because they fire full-powered cartridges. The Colt AR-15 is not an assault rifle because it lacks selective-fire capabilities. Similarly, the SKS is not an assault rifle because it uses a fixed magazine rather than a detachable one. In the United States, the term "assault rifle" is also sometimes confused with "assault weapon." This is a different legal category that includes many semi-automatic weapons. Understanding these technical distinctions is essential to understanding modern small arms history.
