The M16 rifle is a major family of assault rifles used by many military forces.

It was adapted from the ArmaLite AR-15 design for the United States military. This rifle is significant because it changed how soldiers carry and use ammunition. Most older rifles used large, heavy rounds that were difficult to control. The M16 uses a smaller, high-velocity 5.56x45mm cartridge. This design allows soldiers to carry more ammunition at once. It also serves as a benchmark for modern assault rifles worldwide.

The M16 operates using a small-caliber, high-velocity cartridge.

The 5.56mm bullet travels at very high speeds. This high velocity is a key part of how the rifle works. Because the bullets are small, the rifle has much less recoil. Recoil is the backward impulse felt when a firearm is discharged. This reduced recoil allows for better control during automatic fire. The rifle also uses lightweight materials like forged aluminum alloy and plastic. These materials help keep the weapon light for the user.

There have been several distinct generations of the M16 series.

The original M16 was a 5.56x45mm automatic rifle with a 20-round magazine. In 1964, the XM16E1 entered service and was used during the Vietnam War. The M16A1 later replaced the M14 as the standard service rifle. It included a bolt-assist, also called a forward-assist, and a chrome-plated bore. In 1983, the Marine Corps adopted the M16A2. This version featured a heavy barrel, a case deflector, and an adjustable rear sight.

The M16A4 was adopted in July 1997. This fourth generation includes a quad Picatinny rail for mounting optics.

The history of the M16 began with debates over ammunition size. In 1928, a U.S. Army board recommended smaller caliber rounds. However, the Army ignored this for 35 years. After World War II, designers sought a single automatic rifle to replace many older models. During the Korean War, combat showed that the .30 carbine round was underpowered. This led to a need for an intermediate round. ArmaLite designer Eugene Stoner revealed the AR-15 in May 1957.

Although the Army initially preferred the M14, the Air Force adopted the AR-15 as its standard model. In 1963, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara ordered the halt of M14 production to favor the AR-15.

The M16 has reached incredible production numbers over the decades. Approximately 8 million M16s have been produced worldwide. This makes it the most-produced firearm of its 5.56mm caliber. The design was revolutionary because parts were stamped rather than hand-machined. This allowed for much faster mass production. The use of plastic stocks also helped reduce the total weight. These factors combined to make the M16 a highly efficient tool for large-scale military use. It became the standard assault-rifle cartridge for much of the world.

Various technical details highlight the rifle's specialized design.

The M16A2 introduced a fire selector for semi-auto and three-round burst modes. This gave soldiers more options for how they engaged targets. The M16A4 generation added a removable carrying handle. It also included rails to attach ancillary devices like sights. Some versions were even adapted to hold grenade launchers.

These modifications show how the platform could evolve to meet different combat needs. The rifle's reliability was tested extensively in South Vietnam by the ARVN. They reported zero broken parts during one stage of testing.

The M16 has shaped the future of military technology. It led to the development of small-caliber, high-velocity rifles by every major army. While the U.S. military has largely replaced the M16 with the shorter M4 carbine, the influence remains.

The M16's legacy is even seen in the newest programs. In April 2022, the U.S. Army selected the SIG MCX SPEAR. This new weapon is designated the M7 and will eventually replace the M16 and M4. The transition from the M14 to the M16 changed the global standard for what an assault rifle should be.
