It was developed in the United States during the 1980s. The weapon is a shortened version of the M16A2 assault rifle. Because of its compact size, it is ideal for close quarters combat. Many experts describe it as one of the defining firearms of the 21st century. Today, more than 60 countries use the M4 worldwide.

\n\nThe M4 functions through a system of modularity and adaptability. This means parts can be added or swapped to change how it works. One major kit is called SOPMOD, which provides various optical attachments.

Soldiers can also attach underbarrel weapons to the rifle. These include the M203 or M320 grenade launchers. Some versions even use the Masterkey or M26-MASS shotguns. This flexibility allows the rifle to meet many different needs in the field.\n\nThere are several distinct versions and stages of the M4. The M4A1 is a key variant used by the U.S. Army. It features a thicker barrel to help with heat. It also replaces the burst-fire control group with a fully automatic one.

This allows for more consistent fire. The Army also uses the SOPMOD Block II, which includes different phased replacements for accessories.

These changes ensure the weapon remains effective for modern combat.\n\nThe history of the M4 began with earlier carbine designs. During the Vietnam War, the CAR-15 family was used for close combat. However, those early rifles had design issues. Their short barrels upset the ballistics, which reduced range and accuracy. In 1982, the U.S. Government asked Colt to create a carbine version of the M16A2.

By 1987, the Marine Corps had officially adopted the M4. The 1991 Gulf War later proved the rifle's value to the Army.

\n\nSignificant numbers show the scale of the M4's use and evolution. Since 1994, there have been over 90 modifications to the weapon. In 2011, the Army began a massive project to upgrade 300,000 carbines to the M4A1 standard. Each upgrade cost approximately $240 per rifle. This total project cost was about $120 million.

By 2013, the U.S. Marine Corps held 80,000 M4 carbines in its inventory. These upgrades improved accuracy and allowed for easier use by left-handed shooters.\n\nThe M4 has been used in many major global events. It saw action in Kosovo in 1999 with the NATO-led Kosovo Force. It was also used heavily during the war on terror. This included Operation Enduring Freedom and the Iraq War.

In the Marine Corps, the M4 is often used by vehicle operators and squad leaders. These roles require a rifle that is not too bulky. This helps them move more easily in confined spaces.\n\nEven with its success, the M4 is being prepared for replacement. In April 2022, the U.S. Army selected the M7 rifle. The M7 is a variant of the SIG MCX Spear. It won the Next Generation Squad Weapon Program. This program aims to replace the M16 and M4 systems.
