The history of the M16 began with debates over ammunition size. In 1928, a U.S. Army board recommended smaller caliber rounds. However, the Army ignored this for 35 years. After World War II, designers sought a single automatic rifle to replace many older models. During the Korean War, combat showed that the .30 carbine round was underpowered. This led to a need for an intermediate round. ArmaLite designer Eugene Stoner revealed the AR-15 in May 1957.
