He was born in Gosport, Indiana, on November 22, 1922. Stoner moved to Long Beach, California, as he grew up. He worked as a machinist for the Vega Aircraft Company. This company later became the Lockheed Martin Corporation. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific and northern China. His time as an armourer gave him important experience. This work helped him understand how heavy weapons function.

When a rifle is fired, gas moves through a tube. This gas travels from a port in the barrel. It goes into a chamber inside the bolt carrier. The gas pushes against the bolt like a piston. This action moves the bolt carrier away from the barrel. This design uses high pressure gas instead of many mechanical parts. It makes the rifle much lighter for the user. In 1954, Stoner became the chief engineer for ArmaLite. He designed many different prototype models during this time. One success was the AR-5 survival rifle for the Air Force. In 1955, he finished the design for the AR-10 rifle. This rifle weighed only 3.29 kilograms, or about 7.25 pounds. It used a 7.62x51mm NATO caliber. The AR-10 was smaller and lighter than other designs. However, the U.S. Army chose the M14 instead. Later, his assistants designed the AR-15 from the AR-10 model. This smaller version became the famous M16 rifle.

Stoner continued to design many new systems throughout his life. He worked for companies like Colt and Cadillac Gage. He created the modular Stoner 63 Weapons System. This system could be changed into different types of guns. He also designed the SR-25 rifle for Knight's Armament Company. The U.S. Navy uses a version of this called the Mark 11 Mod 0. In 1990, Stoner met Mikhail Kalashnikov. Kalashnikov was the inventor of the AK-47. The two famous designers became very good friends. They visited museums and watched weapons testing together.

This is a gas-operated system designed to cycle the weapon. When a rifle is fired, pressurized propellant gases exit the barrel. These gases travel through a gas port and into a gas tube. The gas is then routed into a chamber inside the bolt carrier. Inside this carrier, the bolt is fitted with piston rings. These rings contain the gas, allowing the bolt and carrier to act like a piston and cylinder. The increased pressure forces the bolt to act as a piston. This pushes the bolt carrier away from the barrel face to cycle the action.

This mechanism is distinct from a conventional direct impingement system. Stoner described his invention as a true expanding gas system. Because it uses high-pressure gas rather than heavy mechanical parts, the rifle remains lightweight. The design also features a symmetric, straight-line recoil layout. In this setup, the recoil spring is located in the stock directly behind the action. This serves as both an operating spring and a recoil buffer. This straight-line design allows recoil forces to drive straight to the rear. Consequently, this reduces muzzle rise and allows for faster follow-up shots.

Stoner's career began with practical experience in manufacturing and combat. He was born in Gosport, Indiana, on November 22, 1922. Due to the Depression, he worked as a machinist for Vega Aircraft Company. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific and northern China as an armourer. This role gave him direct experience with heavy-caliber automatic weapons. These experiences in both the machine shop and combat training shaped his later engineering career. In 1954, he became the chief engineer for ArmaLite, a division of Fairchild Engine & Airplane Corporation.

While at ArmaLite, Stoner developed several important prototypes. In 1955, he completed the initial design for the ArmaLite AR-10. This was a lightweight, select-fire infantry rifle weighing only 3.29 kg (7.25 lb). It utilized the 7.62×51mm NATO caliber. Although the AR-10 was smaller and lighter than competing designs, the U.S. Army rejected it in 1956. They chose the more conventional T44, which became the M14. However, the AR-10 design was later licensed to the Dutch firm Artillerie Inrichtingen. They produced the rifle for various military forces until 1960.

Following the AR-10, Stoner's work led to the creation of the AR-15. At the request of the U.S. military, his assistant Robert Fremont and Jim Sullivan scaled the AR-10 down. They designed it to fire the smaller .223 Remington cartridge. This became the widely recognized M16 rifle. Stoner also created the modular Stoner 63 Weapons System while at Cadillac Gage. This system was highly versatile and could be reconfigured into several different roles. It could function as a standard automatic rifle, a light machine gun, or a medium machine gun.

Stoner's influence extended into specialized precision roles later in his life. In 1990, he joined Knight's Armament Company (KAC). There, he helped create the Stoner Rifle-25, or SR-25. This weapon is currently used by the United States Navy as the Mark 11 Mod 0 Sniper Weapon System.

On May 16, 1990, Stoner had a famous meeting with Mikhail Kalashnikov. Kalashnikov was the inventor of the AK-47. The two legendary designers spent several days sharing stories and visiting museums together. They even visited the Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia, to watch weapons testing.
