A strike fighter is a special kind of plane. It is a multirole combat aircraft. This means it can do more than one job. It can work as an attack aircraft. It can also work as an air superiority fighter. Air superiority means it can fight other planes in the sky. This makes it different from a fighter-bomber. It is also close to an interdictor aircraft. However, it focuses more on fighting in the air.

These planes work by being ready for many tasks. They can fly to attack targets on the ground. They can also defend the air from other planes. Some modern planes have a special skill called stealth. Stealth helps them hide from radar. This allows them to do ground attacks and reconnaissance. Reconnaissance means they look at an area to gather information. They can also perform air defense missions. This makes them very useful for many different jobs.

The history of this name goes back a long time. In the 1940s, navies used the term for some planes. The Westland Wyvern was one such aircraft. The Blackburn Firebrand and Blackburn Firecrest were others. In 1953, NATO used a different name. They called them light weight tactical strike fighters. Many designs were made for that competition. These included the Fiat G.91 and the Dassault Étendard VI.

The term became very common in the United States Navy. This happened by the end of the 1970s. They used the name for the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet. In 1983, the Navy changed group names. They changed Fighter Attack Squadrons to Strike Fighter Squadrons. They did this to avoid confusion with pure fighters. The name then spread to other uses. The F-15E Strike Eagle was once a dual role fighter.

Many famous planes are strike fighters today. The Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is one example. The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is another. You might also see the Russian Sukhoi Su-34. The Chinese Shenyang J-16 is also in this group. There is even a newer F-15EX Eagle II. These planes are built to be very strong and fast. They help nations protect their skies and ground.
