Some planes have a very special job. They are called interdictors. These are attack aircraft or tactical bombers. They fly far behind enemy lines. Their main goal is air interdiction. This means they stop or slow down enemy forces. They target things like military supplies and logistics.

This work helps control the battlefront.

Interdictors use a clever way to stay safe. They fly at very low altitudes. This is called terrain masking. They use hills and trees to hide. This helps them avoid radar-guided weapons. Sometimes they must pull up to clear power lines.

Flying low is a hard job. It uses a lot of fuel. Because of this, interdictors are often fairly large.

Many countries worked to build these planes. The RAF once used the English Electric Canberra jet. They also started a project called the TSR-2. The name meant Tactical Strike and Reconnaissance, Mach 2. That program was later cancelled.

The US also made a similar plane. It was the General Dynamics F-111. These planes were built for different needs.

Europe worked together on a new design. They started the Multi Role Combat Aircraft program. This led to the Panavia Tornado Interdictor/Strike. This is often called the IDS.

The Soviet Union also made a plane. It was the Sukhoi Su-24. That plane came out in the early 1970s. Each country had its own version.

Interdictors are different from strike fighters. Strike fighters focus on air-to-air combat. They are multirole combat aircraft. Interdictors focus more on the ground targets.

Larger versions are called penetrators. They are built to go deep into enemy lands. You can think of them as specialized tools. They do one important task very well. They make sure supplies do not reach the fight.
