Fighter aircraft are special military planes built for air-to-air combat. Their most important goal is to gain air superiority. This means they control the sky above a battlefield.

When fighters control the air, they protect bombers and attack planes. This allows those planes to hit targets safely. It also stops enemy planes from doing the same thing. To do this job well, fighters need great speed. They also need high maneuverability, which means they can turn quickly.

How these planes work has changed a lot over time. Early planes were very small and used light weapons. They often had wooden frames covered in fabric.

Later, builders used metal to make them much stronger. During World War II, most fighters were all-metal monoplanes. They used machine guns or cannons to fight.

Eventually, turbojet engines replaced older piston engines. These jet engines provided much more speed. This change required new tools for the pilots. For example, they needed ejection seats to escape safely. They also used G-suits to handle the heavy forces of fast turns.

History shows how much technology has grown since World War I. During that first war, fighters were used to stop enemy planes from spying.

In the 1920s, the United Kingdom began calling these planes "fighters." Before that, the British Royal Flying Corps called them "scouts." The U.S. Army used the name "pursuit" aircraft until the 1940s.

By the 1950s, new radar homing missiles were created. These allowed pilots to fight from much longer distances. In the 1960s, missiles began to replace guns and rockets. However, the Vietnam War showed that guns were still useful.

Modern fighters use very advanced technology to stay ahead. Many use stealth technology to hide from enemy radar.

Stealth works by using special shapes and coatings. These help hide the plane by absorbing or moving radar waves. Modern planes are also much larger and heavier than older ones. They often use composite structures to help manage this weight.

The business of making these planes is huge. In 2017, the global market for combat aircraft was worth $45.75 billion. This number is expected to grow to $47.2 billion by 2026.

Fighters can be sorted into different groups based on their jobs. Some are interceptors designed to catch incoming enemy planes.

Others are strategic fighters that fly long distances to protect bombers. Some are dual-role, meaning they can fight in the air and attack the ground.

You might recognize names like the F-15 Eagle or the F-22 Raptor. Many modern planes, like the F/A-18 Hornet, are multi-role. This means they can do many different tasks very well. This makes them a smart and less expensive choice for many countries.
