A strategic bomber is a special kind of aircraft.

These planes fly very long distances. Their main job is to drop large amounts of weapons on distant targets. These targets are often important places like factories or military bases. By hitting these spots, they try to stop an enemy from fighting a war. This is different from tactical bombers. Tactical bombers attack soldiers or equipment during a battle. Strategic bombers focus on the things that keep a war running.

How these missions work can change based on the tools used. Most modern strategic bombers can carry nuclear weapons. They can also carry conventional weapons, which are standard high-explosive bombs. Some planes use stealth technology to hide. Stealth helps them avoid being seen by radar networks. This allows them to fly into enemy territory more safely. Other planes use aerial refueling to fly even further. This is when another plane gives them fuel while they are in the air. This makes it possible to reach targets across the whole world.

These planes have a long and interesting history. The first strategic bombing efforts happened during World War I.

The Russians used the Sikorsky Ilya Muromets. This was the first heavy aircraft with four engines. During World War II, many new types of bombers appeared. The British used the Avro Lancaster for area bombing.

The Americans used the B-29 Superfortress in the Pacific. Later, during the Cold War, many bombers were built to carry nuclear bombs. This was part of a strategy to keep peace through deterrence.

Today, only three countries operate strategic heavy bombers.

The United States has the largest group. They have 130 bombers in active service. These include the B-52 Stratofortress, the B-1 Lancer, and the B-2 Spirit. China has 120 Xi'an H-6 bombers. Russia has 119 bombers in its fleet. Their bombers include the Tu-95, the Tu-22M, and the Tu-160. Each country uses different models to reach their goals.

You might recognize some of these planes from movies or news. Even though they were built for big wars, they do other jobs now. For example, many B-52s have been used in different conflicts like the Vietnam War.

Instead of nuclear weapons, they often carry high-explosive weapons for tactical roles. Some older planes are still flying today. The Tu-95 is an example of a plane that stays in service. Even as technology changes, these big planes remain a huge part of how countries protect themselves.
