A medium bomber is a special type of military aircraft. These planes are designed to carry a medium amount of bombs. They also fly medium distances. This name helps people tell them apart from other planes. Light bombers carry about one ton of bombs. Medium bombers usually carry about two tons. Heavy bombers carry four tons or more.

How these planes work depends on their design. In the early 1930s, many air forces wanted to modernize. They moved away from old biplanes. Most new medium bombers used two engines. They were often built with all-metal frames. These planes were made to be very fast. High speed helped them evade new fighter aircraft. Some designs even started as passenger airliners or transport planes.

Many famous planes were used during World War II. The North American B-25 Mitchell was a very common American medium bomber. The Polish PZL.37 Łoś was a very advanced plane for its time. The Japanese Mitsubishi G4M, also called the "Betty," was another example. Other planes included the British Vickers Wellington and the Italian Savoia-Marchetti SM.79. The Vickers Wellington was very popular and used a special aluminum lattice frame.

History shows that these distinctions changed over time. By the middle of World War II, things were shifting. Average fighter aircraft could suddenly carry 2,000 pounds of bombs. This meant the lines between light and medium bombers began to disappear. After the war, the term "medium bomber" mostly vanished. Many planes became too old to use. New planes that did similar jobs were called tactical bombers or strike aircraft instead.

Even after the war, the name appeared in new ways. In the 1950s, the U.S. Strategic Air Command used it again. They used it to tell the Boeing B-47 Stratojet apart from the huge B-52 Stratofortress. This was mostly for organization. Today, we use different names for planes that do similar work. Examples include the Su-24 or the F-111. These modern planes have more power than the old medium bombers.
